Saturday Outfits

Sorry I didn’t do a Saturday Outfit post my photographer wasn’t available. So instead I was preparing outfits for 30 for 30 , crafting some gifts for Christmas and catching up some reading.

I also did some blogger stalking, mostly fashionista blogs, I am very interested in how some are taking what they have in their own closets and remixing them or they are in a budget that I am in. I mean who in this economy can afford Chanel and still afford to put gas in the car, keep a roof over their head and food in the stomach.
I’m single with no children, but I still have bills to pay and money is tight. Don’t get me wrong I do dream of a quilted Chanel purse but I need to keep my priorities straight.

I really do like the remixing idea from Kendi. Mainly because I really have no space in my closet or my dresser drawers to put anymore clothes in. I live in a 1950’s NYC apartment with tiny closets.

So if you are like me and have a budget, small closets or just really like real life fashion take a look at these blogs that I found this past week.

DIY One Hour Fabric HeadBoard

Hi all! Its another rainy dreary day in NYC today, which is perfect for two things soup and a stay at home project. Well really I didnt have a choice in the matter, my dad has been on my case asking me when am I going to get to his headboard ever since 6 months ago that I made my headboard well today was the day.

You can warm up nice bowl of soup mine is French onion and eat it during the making of this headboard. If you aren't coordinated to do so, there is nothing wrong with that. Warm up the soup after and enjoy your work.

I had already purchased the materials here and there the last being the fabric its very difficult buying a fabric for a man who is so picky.

I didn't get as fancy or technical with the headboard, it was just for my father who wanted something to keep his pillows from falling behind the bed and to finish off the basic mattress frame bed. He could have gone out and bought a headboard but they are way overpriced. Plus the hassle of looking for the right color to match the rest of the room and style without getting "all girly" as he said. The following pics below are a few options to buy but way to fancy and "girly" for a 65 year old man.

How to make a Easy Fabric Headboard

Materials and Tools

1. Heavy duty stapler with 3/8in staples

2. 3/8 in plywood that is wide enough and high enough for the bed it is for
Make sure it is high enough for the padding to go from the top of the mattress to as high as you want it to go.
For the queen size bed I have I used 5ft wide by 5ft high piece of plywood

3. Enough fabric to cover the front of the headboard plus the foam and be able to wrap it around the back to fasten with out any weird pulls or even tears. mine was 3 yards of 60 inch fabric

4. 2 inch thick foam that wide enough to go from the top of the mattress to the top of the headboard and the length has to be the same as the width of the plywood. mine was and old twin size foam topper that I cut to size

5. Batting that is the same size as the fabric you purchased
I didn't use any on this project because I didn't remember till last minute that I didn't have any , I will kick myself if it starts tearing at the edges, which it is supposed to prevent

6. A long piece of lumber or a yard stick

7. A cutting knife

8. Fabric cutting scissors

9. Black marker

10. Measuring tape

Step One

Measure, mark and cut your foam to length. It helps using the long piece of wood as a guide and to push down the foam as you cut the foam.

Step Two

Make a few staples in the foam where the bottom of the foam would meet the mattress. This is to hold the foam in place when you turn the plywood over. The batting would also serve the same purpose. But remember I am the forgetful one who forgot to buy hers.

Step Three

The instructions for attaching the fabric is the same as attaching the batting.

Staple the fabric to the front of the headboard first. Laying the board down on the floor foam side up, adjust the fabric around the front of the board making it all even around with enough fabric to wrap around the top, side and bottom of the foam. Cut extra fabric. Measure the middle of the headboard at the bottom for a queen size it is 30 inches and staple along the bottom of the foam. Measure two more times between the middle and the ends and staple along the bottom of the foam. The stapling ensures that the fabric lies evenly across the headboard especially if it has a pattern. Staple in between the first three staples evenly along the bottom of the foam.

Step Four

Turn the whole headboard over so that u see the back of the plywood board. Bring the fabric around to the back of the board to staple. As you measured and stapled in the front do so with the top flap stopping 10 inches from the sides. Bring in the first and second side stapling in the middle and working your way up and down the sides. To finish off the top flap turn the sides in and overlap the top as you would be tucking in the sheets on a bed. Staple all the extra fabric down to keep from having lumps to make the headboard as flush as possible to the wall.

Now turn it over and adjust the fabric as necessary you can take out staples and re staple if fabric is being pulled oddly. You can add nail head or covered buttons and tufts if you want. But that is another diy for another day. But if you want it plain as day as my Father this is the result.

This is mine

Mine is made with a raw silk material. Smaller headboard requires less material so I spent a little bit more dinero. I did use the nail heads along the top and I do plan to out them down the sides as well.

So hopefully this DIY was helpful and keeping a few dollars in your pocket as well a your eyes happy. If not, nobody told you to buy the expensive fabric, haha just kidding. Whatever ♥

Saturday outfits

Ive been wanting to start a outfit post ever since Ive started my blog. My blog isn't fashion focused but fashion and clothes are a big part of my life. Every thing that I do is designed oriented. Whether it is my jewelry making, my art, my photography, food I cook, my room redo, it is all part of design.
While I would never call my self a fashionista, I do like to shop and put thought into what I wear everyday. Well not everyday, during the week I work in a garage and my out fits consist of a pair of timberlands, jeans and a t-shirt, all of which I don't mind getting dirty. So that leaves me the weekends, but really since Sunday is my relax day, Saturdays are mostly the days I get to go out play with my outfits. Saturdays work out better too since my friend David is around to take my pictures. So from now on I will have Saturday Outfit Day! Yay! Aren't you all excited?

These are from Saturday, November 20th
I had a little fun with the leaves in the park

These are from Saturday, November 27th

Its fall in NYC if you can't tell and I also happen to live in the borough with the most parks per square mile. So I've been doing the photo shoots in parks in my neighborhood. The leaves I believe not only make a great contrast but the kid in me thinks are fun to kick around. Whatever ♥

Coach Holiday 2010 blogger Campaign in Soho

Being the opportunist that I am, I went to the Coach Holiday 2010 blogger Campaign in Soho to meet other bloggers and get some advice for my own blog. I figured it was similar to the Fashion Night Out events. So I mingled met a few new bloggers like Kristina plus some of the bloggers: Kieko and Claire that I just found the week before. I also got to make a flip book and eat some great appetizers lobster roll was my favorite and drink very yummy drinks I need the recipe for the cranberry one. My only regret was taking advantage of the 25% discount on everything in the store, I had my eye on one bag.

Something Seems Familiar

So almost everyone knows I am a Twilight fan, to the point that I could be called a Twihard. And now that it is the last installment of the series Breaking Dawn is being filmed, I've really been paying attention, I'm not the only one.

A few pictures have leaked from the sets in Brazil of Kristen Steward and Robert Pattinson as Bella Swan or is it Cullen? and Edward Cullen Apparently they have been filming the arrival scene Well I noticed something familiar, Bella's dress. I have a dress very similar, granted it is a classic sheath dress and they could be found almost anywhere.

Now for those who are looking for the exact dress, well you cant because its vintage and so is mine. But I have recreated the look with help of Polyvore And because it is a simple look it can be created at any budget.

And if anyone cares this is my dress. I had bought it in 2003 for a wedding and I haven't worn it since.

I think I might pull that dress out for my company's Christmas party. I just may copy the Bella outfit or I may not.

I really like the belt. Whatever ♥

I have an excuse.

Ok someone please put a fire under my butt, because I need to post.

I have an excuse, I had major surgery back in September and I couldn't sit at the computer long enough to type any posts. Really I shouldn't now either, but I'll be paying for it later.

Anyways I made some jewelry, painted some painting, and sewed some flowers. The DIYs will come soon after.

This flower is in watercolors

How do I describe this one?

I have more pics coming or whatever♥

My Room Redo.

I've been saying for 3 years now that I would redo my bedroom. I've been in and out of this room for over 10 years and it needed some TLC asap. The walls were a sickness/depression inducing yellowing off-white. The trim was a sad peeling dirty white. I'm forgetting to mention the 20 holes from different window curtain set ups (not me, I never had curtains.) I hated being in the room, and mostly I didn't care about it until I realized I'm gonna be here for another 10 years. Something had to be done.

If anyone knows how hard it is to prep a room, I think it is just as hard to pick a paint color for a room. It took years, I started out with colors in the aqua blue family, I had paint chips all over my room for 2 years. Then somehow I saw a room that was grey with deep purple accents and I knew I had to recreate the colors. Now Grey is a color that I thought was going to be easy, NOT! You can see in some of the before's that I had already painted swatches on the wall, well those were there since November. And once I decided on a paint I went to Home Depot to get the paint and much to my demise after going back and forth to the Dopey (4 times) they didn't have the color in a non-primer mix, so I had to choose another color and bring it home to test it. The final color I choose was Home Depot's Behr's Sterling 780E-3 I had to pre-prime the wall because the high gloss that was my wall paint and because the true color of the new paint would show better.
I'm not even going to go into the actual prep and painting process, that I will put in another post as the behind the scenes of my room redo. So without further ado, here it is:

Before:

After:

Now granted I want to do a whole lot more. I never got to finish the floors or replace the shoe molding. I also need to get a book shelf thingy for my books. I need to recover some storage boxes to make them all uniform. I need a frame for the the painting my mom did thats over the bed. I also need to take out the green dresser that is holding my TV and get some kind of shelving for that. So much work. So little time. Whatever ♥

Record High

OK, I know you are thinking, what does a record high have to do with a blog post? Nothing really, but it did hit a record high of 92 degrees here in New York City. MY question is, is summer right around the corner and the last few days were only a tease? And no I don't think it is global warming, because you'd have to go back to the 1920's for the last record highs for these days. Ponder that.
Anyways what have I been up to you ask? I know it has been a while since my last post but really I have been a busy bee.

Well I went to see West Side Story on Broadway (3). It was a last minute idea on my friend's part, he is like that sometimes and it works out half the time. It is a good play and I recomend it to all. Do you see the black Chinese shoes (2)? Well my friend saw something on Etsy using those shoes that she wants me to recreate. I bought a pair for myself but I have different plans for those. Speaking of my friend, almost since the beginning of our friendship she has been a vegetarian, now as of the middle of last month she has been on her way to becoming a vegan. She is not doing it for diets sake, but for the animals. She has strong feelings about animal welfare and cares not to consume animal products. That's where the purple sneakers come in (4). The are vegan sneakers, from a vegan shoe store on the lower east side that the name is not coming to my mind at this moment, I'll get back to you on that aren't they cute and only $55. That same day I managed to spend way to much money on clothes and I had to get rid of other clothes to make space for the new ones. Oh and just the other day while shopping yes more shopping for shorts at Old Navy, I got these stockings (1) for 25 cents each. I love Peacock feathers I have them on everything I think I am going to cut them up and make a cover for my office chair.

Going back to those shoes my friend wants me to copy, is it OK to do so. I mean there is jewelery pieces by some designers that are similar to mine that are on there but I never saw their work nor have the designers seen mine. I don't know what to think, I just had to ask. Whatever ♥

Notes On A Roll

It's funny how things work, like coincidences. Just this week I was cleaning out my work office closet and I found two rolls of adding machine paper. Note to Juliet if she sees this, I was using an adding machine and a ledger book as recent as 2008, hehe! Rather than throwing them out, I put them to the side, deciding that I would figure out what to do with them later.
And so now it is later. Three days later to be exact and lookie what I found. Going through Urban Nest blog I found a tutorial that uses them perfectly here
Now I'm "stealing" two of this rolls even though we don't use them anymore to take home. Whatever ♥

Femininity with a Twist

So yesterday on my way to a Dr appointment I drove past a 2009 Chevy Camaro with painted yellow with black stripes, I almost crashed. Since it was parked by the Taco Bell I was planning on eating in later after my appointment I would take a closer inspection on it so I didn't stop.
Because not just a week ago I was on the highway when another one got on the highway just in front of me. I immediately followed it until I lost it in traffic, I was pretty bummed when it was gone. No I didn't tailgate it.

Now being a girl and having not just a thing for cars but a thing for clothes too, I kinda got distracted and went shopping at Filenes basement (which is conveniently in the same shopping center as my doctor's office.) I spent at least and hour between there and a shoe store in the shopping center (forgetting about the Camaro.) But as it was being hungry and needing to stop on my way home I still went in the direction of Taco Bell. And guess what was still there????

Yes it was. And to my excitement it was the Transformers edition. You can see the Autobots badge on the side fender. I almost hugged the car. I waited for the driver while I was in Taco Bell eating (not knowing what I'd say,) but I waited. Then the car took off. Sometime between bites the driver walked to his car and got in, uggh. Now granted I didn't have the greatest view of the car from my table ( the front have of the car was blocked by the wall,) but still.
Later that evening I got a mani and pedi. The girl looked at me cross eyed when I said I wanted yellow nails with two vertical black stripes on the big nails. Yes I did, thank you very much. I'll spare you the picture details but they look so cute. On the other hand I also got tips put on my hand nails and of course they got effed up when I had to bring up my bags from shopping up to the house when I got home. Guess I'll have to fix them today. Whatever ♥
